When printing deep, saturated colors (such as true blacks or vibrant neons), the printer drops a massive amount of water-based dye onto the paper. Standard lightweight papers cannot absorb this volume quickly enough, leading to severe cockling (wrinkling) and disastrous printhead strikes. In fast-paced textile mills, operators often refer to dye-sublimation media simply as sub paper or subli paper. Regardless of the terminology used on the factory floor, when your production shifts to hard substrates (like coated mugs or aluminum) or deep-colored sportswear, upgrading to a high grammage sublimation paper is strictly required. Standard lightweight "subli paper" simply cannot hold the heavy ink saturation without severe cockling and striking the printhead.
Can I use heavyweight 120gsm sublimation paper for fast-fashion apparel?
While possible, it is not cost-effective. Heavyweight papers (100gsm-120gsm) are more expensive per square meter and take slightly longer to dry due to the thicker coating. For high-volume, low-ink fast-fashion apparel, we strongly recommend our lightweight series (e.g., 33gsm or 42gsm) to significantly reduce your production costs.
